Gay matters

As I watch, and sometimes participate, in what happens with the current protests, I wonder what is being sparked in me; what stories or deeper currents of feeling are being stirred? I connect with Black Lives Matter in many ways, but most essentially through my struggles as a queer man: struggles for rights, for recognition, and for sense. This struggle was always twofold for me: the revolution that is televised (AIDS, marriage, etc.) and the internal revolution that is not televised (who am I, where have I approach from, where am I going?).

What, then, is our queer story and strife all about? What are our vital myth(s), the dominant themes or principles or essences that we bring, not so much as over-the-top personalities but as gifts: the inborn talents or presence that each individual gives to the whole? What is our unusual contribution to the world that produce us (or anyone) valuable? What is the struggle for rights and recognition truly about?

Turning to Western cultural history, we can travel back as far as the ancient Greeks, to the start of it all. Plato’s Symposium speaks openly

LGBTQ Rights

The ACLU has a drawn-out history of defending the LGBTQ community. We brought our first LGBTQ rights case in Founded in , the Jon L. Stryker and Slobodan Randjelović LGBTQ & HIV Project brings more LGBTQ rights cases and activism initiatives than any other national organization does and has been counsel in seven of the nine LGBTQ rights cases that the U.S. Supreme Court has decided. With our reach into the courts and legislatures of every state, there is no other organization that can pair our record of making progress both in the courts of law and in the court of public opinion.

The ACLU’s current priorities are to end discrimination, harassment and violence toward trans person people, to close gaps in our federal and state civil rights laws, to prevent protections against discrimination from being undermined by a license to discriminate, and to protect LGBTQ people in and from the criminal legal system.
