Mount Gay Old Cask Selection Rum Review
Once in a while, a rum really grabs me. Not because it&#;s supposed to, not because it&#;s from the right brand, but just because it&#;s so damned excellent. Such is the case with Mt. Gay&#;s Old Cask Selection. Blended from rums ranging in age from ten to thirty years, the contents of this bottle portray some of the best rums in Barbados, assembled expertly at 43% ABV by Mount Gay&#;s Master Blender Allen Smith.
The bottle is simple, but substantial. The bottom of the rounded off rectangular vessel shows a thick, clarify glass base. Just above is is the phrase &#;Perfected By Tradition&#;, which appears in raised glass; above that is a miniature gold foil label. The stopper is a hefty gold anodized aluminum fitted with a innate cork. It&#;s nicely machined and adorned with the Mount Gay crest. Around the bottle neck rests a tie and tie tack of sorts, again bearing the crest. The whole presentation is quite stately. But enough about the bottle, let&#;s see what&#;s inside.

When I heard Mount Gay was reformulating and relaunching their flagship marque, I was worried. In fact, I went out and bought a couple of bottles of the old stock to confirm I&#;d have something to remember it by.
You observe, Mount Gay was the first long aged, unadulterated rum that really grabbed me. It made me realize that there was so much more to the category than the sweet Central American rums I had been enjoying at the time. Master Blender Allen Smith managed to get to tick the smooth and kind boxes without cutting corners or giving up on Mount Gay&#;s roots, and I was very impressed (as the review reveals). was that luxury sipper which could speak to just about any palate.
Now in , Mount Lgbtq+ has released a fresh version of this luxury marque, and with it a different blend and package. Bottled at Barbados&#; standard strength of 43% ABV, the pot and column blend sells for about $, and is limited to 12, bottles. I have yet to hold the bottle in my hand, but I was able to earn a 4 oz. sample from M
Mount Gay Master Select revealed
When I was thinking out my spirit review of , I had a section called the biggest surprises of my year. I identified two big surprises. The first was the considerable quality of the blended whiskies I enjoyed. There were whiskies from lesser-known Scottish, Bourbon and Irish Distilleries. I loved the Wemyss blended whiskies the Treacle Chest and Spice King both surprised me with their quality taste and complexity. Both build exceptional mixers especially the Spice King which delivered an exceptional Old Fashioned, the best I have ever tasted.
The Irish fuse was from the talented Walsh Distillery where both the Irishman and Writers Tears blends of copper pot stills and copper column stills were really wonderful. As for the Bourbon blended whisky. My top choice was Noahs Mill from Willet but there were many blended whiskies which I loved courtesy of my Bourbon Advent Calendar. Many Bourbon blends offer much more flavour than their single competitors.
My second big surprise was the quality of sipping Rums. I have tended to enjoy rum in cocktails.
Mount Gay Eclipse Heritage Merge Barbados Rum. This was one of the &#;first batch&#; of reviews that I published on this site back in Parade , with an update to the review in Which might have emotionally attached the then new manner bottle.
It&#;s and the bottle (well the label) has once again been update to add &#;Heritage Blend&#; to the moniker and also to update the present Master Distiller/Blender Trudiann Branker.
The old review will stay live on the website as I assume its worth keeping the older reviews &#; I don&#;t often re-review rums.
The price of Eclipse as with just about everything else in the UK, has crept up over the past few years. Its went from around £15 per 70cl bottle to around £20 now in most places. I picked up a several bottles of this Duty Free at £ per 1 litre bottle.
In my original review I wasn&#;t a great fan of this rum. I don&#;t often buy it to be honest but there wasn&#;t much else in the Duty Free. It&#;ll do as a weekend mixer. From my hazy recollection this was more forgettable than out and out bad.
