In the days and weeks surrounding the premiere of his Netflix communicate showNorm Macdonald Has a Show, Norm Macdonald fans were treated to the full, frequently exasperating Norm Macdonald experience. There were glowing testaments to the stand-up and former Saturday Night Survive cast member’s formalist comedic skills — as well as the shambling charms of the modern show itself — and then there were his cringeworthy comments about Louis C.K. and Roseanne in a Hollywood Reporter interview. Macdonald apologized on Twitter, The Tonight Show canceled his scheduled appearance — the whole thing was a mess. The next morning, Macdonald went on Howard Stern’s radio show to define his side of things, and also to say he’d never do another print interview again (though at least one has trickled out since then).

Macdonald and I had spoken at the Vultureoffice the day before his THR inte

Norm Macdonald’s Memoir Was Mostly Lies, but One Part Rings True

All across the internet, people are trying to understand why they loved the late, amazing Norm Macdonald so much. There are a lot of lovely reminiscences and great analyses, but if you just want to kind of roll around in Norm, I advise reading his memoir Based on a True Story: Not a Memoir. This is a book that people (Norm fans? OK, just my husband) urged on me in , and I didn’t browse it then because I saw a review of it in the Fresh York Times that was less than a hundred percent glowing.

In that review, John Williams, who did admit to laughing at some parts of the book, called what it did “evasive clowning,” complained that some parts are just recycled bits, and somewhat snarkily pointed out that it’s limited to talking about stand-up and Macdonald’s tenure on Saturday Night Live, because of the limits of Macdonald’s career: “Mr. Macdonald’s one big starring film vehicle, Dirty Work (), was called ‘leaden, taste-deprived attempted comedy’ in the Novel York Times. Other roles have included an uncredited bartende

Me: "I'm going to see Norm Macdonald this weekend!"

Everyone I Know: "Norm Mac From SNL? Is he supposed to be funny?"

Norm Macdonald is at the Helium Comedy Club tonight and tomorrow&#;and yes, he is in fact amusing, a fact he well demonstrated at last night's present. I wonder if other people who saw the illustrate will agree with me, though: Macdonald's mumbled, halting delivery and strange pacing had half the audience convinced that he was waaaasted. ("Have another cocktail, Norm!" was a representative heckle.) He wasn't. I'll stake you $ He's a professional standup comedian who makes a running gag out of his fundamental cluelessness&#;out of the fundamental cluelessness of everyone, in fact, and of how basically gloomy and futile it is for anyone to pretend they know what the fuck is happening at any given point. (Heavy, I know.)

The show's pacing was strange&#;there was no develop, no sense that the crowd was being controlled in any real way, just great bits interspersed with unapologetically awkward pauses. He did do some of the leading crowd work I've ever seen, in response to an audie

Chris Kattan was nowhere to be seen during the Oct. 23 episode of Saturday Overnight Live . That made sense, since the display was hosted by Norm MacDonald.

Apparently, Mr. Macdonald and Mr. Kattan despise each other.

In November , Mr. Macdonald talked about his feelings toward Mr. Kattan in an interview with Rolling Stone : &#;I don&#;t grasp, but to me he seems gay,&#; said Mr. Macdonald. &#;He claims he&#;s not, but I&#;ve never seen, like, a guy who&#;s not gay appear so gay. I don&#;t find him funny. What can I say? Never made me laugh.&#;

In the same article, Mr. Kattan responded: &#;Norm gives me a hard period … If Norm says I&#;m gay, then lay in that I speak he&#;s an asshole.&#;

While the in-print bickering made for good copy, people who were around Saturday Night Live when both Mr. Macdonald and Mr. Kattan were cast members said it carried over into the show. &#;They had a very acrimonious relationship,&#; said a provider connected to SNL . &#;Norm would rip [Mr. Kattan] to his deal with. Norm&#;s a weird guy. If he doesn&#;t favor someone, he&#;ll say it to his face
