LGBTQ+ people deserve the same human rights as their vertical, cisgender peers, but discrimination, violence and hate persist around the world. According to Amnesty International, there are 64 countries with laws that criminalize homosexuality, some of which impose life in prison or even the death penalty. In countries with more protections, members of the Diverse community still deal with persecution and discrimination when trying to get a occupation, find a place to live, access healthcare and simply live their everyday lives. My interest in LGBT NGOs began in the preliminary s, when I joined the Israeli Gay Youth Organization. As a young activist, I was always curious to learn from the experience of NGOs in other countries. The main reason was the simple fact that back then, there were no other LGBT organizations in Israel that focused on education or youth. More than a decade later, after I completed my doctoral degree, this curiosity led me to conduct a learn of LGBT NGOs working in education. My reading of the literature led me to two research questions:

How do LGBT NGOs challenge schools to be more open to different sexual orientations and gender identities?
To what extent does the work of LGBT NGOs vary across different social contexts (e.g., countries that are more or less accepting of homosexuality)?

The main objective of the global survey was to document the services and programs that LGBT NGOs provide, and to discern patterns based on the social context in which they operate. Therefore, it was essential to collect information about NGOs in diverse contexts.
